Is There Truly Such A Thing As Hang Time?
We have all heard of “Hang Time“, but is it real? The short answer is “no” – science supports this. Whereas this will appear unbelievable to many, it is the truth. The fact is that no matter what it may appear like, no player can hover in the air longer than any other.

As he is coming down the court and jumps, scientific laws start to pertain. The laws state that the original action causes another action that is equal in force but in the opposite direction. What this means in layman’s terms is that the player pushes against the floor and the floor exerts a force back. This action/reaction makes the player to leave the floor. If the player exerts a larger amount of force on the floor, the floor exerts a larger amount of force back. This causes the player to go higher in the air.
This action is compounded as a player is running as he is jumping. His center of gravity will follow a parabolic course for the duration of this process. A persons “center of mass” is situated around their midsection. This means that, if the person were to stay in just the same position for the extent of the whole jumping action, his/her midsection (and consequently, full body) would follow this route. Typically though, a player does not stay in the same position. He will bend and twist.
One thing that players frequently do is raise one (or both knees) while he is jumping.. He does that on his way up. On the way down, of course, he lowers his legs back down and that, in turn causes the center of mass to come back down. This in effect raises his head in relation to the center of mass. The head does not follow the parabolic path. It remains in the same place.
So what you get is for a portion of the period in the air, the head stays at the identical height, but ,during the entire time the center of mass goes up and down.
In essence, the player’s head is the key to why we believe in hang time.
When one person looks at another, they tend to not look at the midpoint of their body. We as a rule concentrate on a person’s head (or at least the upper part of the entire body) . What happens at that second is a bit of an “illusion”, but it truly is happening. The head stays in the same place for an unusually long time since the person changes his center of mass.
