2009 NCAA Dunks

Every sport has their legendary coaches. These coaches are responsible for making a team into an unstoppable force. They rack up win after win, and inspire other teams and coaches. These coaches are defined by their long, successful careers, and there is little doubt they influence the sport indefinitely. Division I Men’s Basketball is no exception; there are several very successful coaches that have come to define triumph in the NCAA.

Adolph Rupp was one of the most famous coaches of them all. He made the University of Kentucky Wildcats’ program into sports most acclaimed programs. Between 1930 and 1972 he amassed 876 wins and won four national titles. Rupp retired at the age of 70, when he reached the mandatory age of retirement in place at UK.

Dean Smith led the legendary Tar Heels to 879 wins at North Carolina. Dean’s coaching legacy is one of the most impressive coaching trees basketball has ever seen. His list of ex-players and various assistants is remarkable, including Roy Williams of UNC and Charlotte Bobcat coach Larry Brown.

Bob Knight, also known as “The General” had 902 career wins. While at Indiana, he amassed 661 of those wins. Knight now works for ESPN as a commenter and analyst.

Jim Phelan is a name that isn’t as well-known as some, but he deserves his spot among the best coaches in NCAA basketball. He coached at Mount St. Mary’s for 49 seasons, amassing 830 wins. Many of the wins occurred in Division II, where Mount St. Mary’s competed until 1988. NCAA rules dictate the 10+ years coaching Division I makes the Division I record book, which is how Phelan’s record stands as it does.

Eddie Sutton coached at more schools than is the norm for our list of influential coaches. His coaching career included stints at Oklahoma State, San Francisco, Kentucky, Creighton, and Arkansas. Eddie Sutton’s exciting and busy career saw him accumulate 804 total wins.

Lefty Driesell started at Davidson in the 1960’s, where he had a great deal of success. After controversy in College Park forced his resignation, Driesell went on to end his career at James Madison and Georgia Southern.

All these coaches have had a significant influence on NCAA basketball. Each in their own way, they define true success in coaching at the collegiate level. They have shaped and changed coaching in the NCAA, leaving their legacy to impact college basketball for years to come.
