Raiders Are Rebuilding Possibly Without JaMarcus Russell

2010 April 30

The Oakland Raiders are in rebuilding mode. They benefited from several good picks in the recent 2010 NFL Draft, and one position is subject to much contention. Quarterback JaMarcus Russell is believed to have been a bust, despite being a No. 1 draft pick. (So were Ryan Leaf and Brian Bosworth.) Last season, they went 5-11 and are looking to get a cash advance out for talented rookies and veterans to don the silver and black and make the commitment to excellence.

Russell may see the Autumn Wind turned cold by the Raiders

The Oakland Raiders drafted JaMarcus Ruseell in 2007. As a rookie, he went 36 for 66, with two TDs, four interceptions and 373 yards. Russell began losing form as the Raiders would go 5-11 for the next two seasons. Bruce Gradkowski replaced Russell for two games against the Bengals and Steelers, both of which were Oakland victories, before getting injured. Fans started calling for Gradkowski to become the starter and for Russell’s benching or release. The Raiders, according to Yahoo! Sports , may soon release Russell, who has been struggling with his fitness.

The 2010 NFL Draft and Raider trades

For the first round, the Oakland Raiders drafted Rolando McClain for linebacker. Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell was traded to Oakland for future draft picks, and the Raiders mostly selected defensive players. Campbell had mixed results with Washington, but was steadily improving and has more experience than Russell. However, with all the payroll loans being put into the defense as well, that entertains a far more delicious prospect.

Tim TeBow should consider himself warned

Tim TeBow, the squeaky clean QB from Florida was just drafted by the Denver Broncos. He is promising, but he’s no Elway yet. That said, one of the biggest rivalries (aside from the Chiefs and the Steelers back in the ’70s) the Raiders maintain is with the Denver Broncos. A talent-packed, unhinged Raiders’ defense and a rookie golden boy? He’d better eat a good breakfast, as he may eat dinner in the afterlife.

What to do at quarterback?

Oakland hasn’t had a winning season since 2002. One of the five quarterbacks on staff is rapidly losing favor with the fans.
